Why Nothing Fits You

You know the struggle. Dragging so many different pieces into the dressing room and leaving with absolutely nothing. Not one thing fit. After struggling with putting on that last pair of jeans and the chiffon top that went on like butter but left you in tears when you tried to take it off. I'm here to assure you it is not your fault.

When it comes to producing a garment in different sizes, it's extremely difficult to alter that garment to fit such a wide variety of body types that people come in. The original is usually given a 1/2" extra for each larger size or taken a 1/2" for each smaller size, but that does vary between brands, hence why you left Forever 21 with 3 bags but exited Marshall's empty handed.

Marshall's was exactly my destination to prove this information right or wrong. I tried on two different pieces in every size available in the store, and compared the fit between each of them.

First was this extremely comfortable swing-y long sleeve top, available in small, medium and large.

The above is the size large. I'm quite small, but I am curvy, so this fit well around my chest, but was very long, the sleeves are very clearly too long as well, the v-neck was too deep for my taste. I wouldn't take this home, unless I were to use it as pajamas.

Here is the medium. I couldn't find many differences between this and the large other than it being slightly shorter in length and sleeves.

When I tried on this small, the differences in measurments were extremely noticeable. The sleeves actually ended at my wrists and the length was something I might actually choose. But the sleeves were a bit tight and this size was a little skin-hugging which isn't really my style. You can really just look at my face and see how uncomfortable I am. Between this and the medium is a huge gap that could fit an entire different size to fit me, it seems like I'm right in the middle.

Out of the three, I would probably choose the medium, despite it not fitting as well as I would like a garment to. I wouldn't wear it out, either; this top would only really make a good pajama top. Trying it on in every size made me sleepy.

Next, I tried on an army green bomber jacket. Unfortunately, a small size wasn't available, but there were medium, large and extra large.

The extra large was comfortable but it wasn't the cutest looking fit. The sleeves were too long and scrunched up at my wrists. The front didn't want to sit straight over my chest and the shoulder seams were a little dropped. I do prefer a cropped jacket, so the length reaching lower than my hands wasn't something I loved either.

The large wasn't too different from the extra large. I guess midway sizes aren't too off from their larger counterparts. the front settled a little nicer, though.

This was the perfect fit. The medium's sleeves hit right at the wrists. The front settled nicely. The shoulder seams aligned perfectly with my shoulders. The length was just right, not too long, not too short. I could actually see myself wearing this jacket.

I know you know the struggle of playing Goldilocks in the dressing room, but I encourage you to not judge any piece by how it looks on the rack. Get in the dressing rooma and try on everything that catches your eye. Give yourself the chance to try something new, even if you do leave empty handed, sometimes that's a good thing. Only take home things you truly like and can visualise yourself wearing. You'll start to see a huge difference in the way you see clothing and, more importantly, how you see yourself.
