Have you ever stopped wearing something because everyone else started wearing it? i/e me with tattoo chokers. Have you ever started wearing something because everyone else started wearing it? i/e everyone with adidas Superstars.
Now, don't get ahead of me here. Whether you wear tattoo chokers or Superstars is up to you. You should wear what you enjoy wearing, whether it be trendy or not atm. Because, you see, trends change and it all has to do with accessibility. What they see on the runway will eventually end up at Nordstrom, and eventually PacSun for cheaper, then Forever 21 or H&M for even less. Whatever is at the hands of that teen with 3,000 Instagram followers and a tight budget is what you'll eventually be seeing on the rest of those teens who follow him. Accessibility, add that to your style vocabulary.
But, why do we want to be cool? And why is style such a big part of that. Integration. We want to be a part of something. We want to have a community. We want to have friends. We want to be loved. After all, God did give Adam an Eve. It is not good for man to be alone. How are clothes gonna give you that, though? It can't.
Consumerism has risen to the point where style and trend have become a necessity of survival. If I wear what everyone else is wearing, I will make friends, I will get into a good school, I will find a good spouse, I will find a well paying job. Maybe we're doing this subconsciously. Jobs and schools have dress codes. It's been implemented since our youth that certain wardrobes represent different things socially. Why has appearance become a part of the rubric for reaching success? We all saw in the critically-acclaimed bio-pic The Social Network how Mark Zuckerberg wore socks and sandals to important business meetings. Is it really important to abide by these strict dress codes? I can't tell you to wear what you like because it would be wrong on my behalf. I'm setting you up for failure. Dress for success. You will receive judgement on what you wear and how you wear it. Don't expect any less. The Millennial generation and soon Generation Z demand flexible dress codes in the workplace and in schools. Some offices permit their employees to wear shorts and joggers to work. More and more schools are lowering their Prom and dance dress codes to broad rubrics such as the one piece swimsuit area being the only required covering.
Maybe we should change the question at this point to: Why Do I Want To Be Cool? Tough. Having a hard time answering myself. Are you wearing something for the sole reason of "everyone else is"? Or do you genuinely enjoy what you are wearing, unbothered by what everyone else may be doing?
