Open Letter To My Mom Jeans

Dear Mom Jeans,

I may not have met you long ago, but your presence in my life has already proven to be long lasting. I said goodbye to skinnies and jeggings and said hello to you, giving my little legs the space to run and jump despite how warm you can be (especially in this hellish, tropical weather).

I will admit I doubted you at first. I assumed you would hug tight to the lumpier parts and hang loose off the smoother parts and I was right, but I love the way you hug my tummy tight and make the shape of my legs disappear. Going out to eat with you isn't my favorite activity. Especially if I'm wearing a belt. You press the metal button straight into my stomach, threatening to spill out every bit of ice cream and pizza I may have consumed. But the pain is a reminder of the pleasant meal I enjoyed along with family or a late night fast food run with friends.

Your silhouette is timeless, reminiscent of those pairs white, suburban moms wore in the 1990's paired with pastel polo shirts and white Skechers. I remember that SNL sketch, seeing Amy Poehler in a pair of mom jeans. You had a reputation. Good ole' mom jeans. Wear them if you're a bore. Not anymore.

These days you're paired with brands like Thrasher and emoji patches, ripped until all that's left are mere threads to hang onto. I confess I own and wear a pair embellished with food motifs and hip wording. But there's nothing like a good old pair of light wash mom jeans.

You compliment my fanciest blouses and my comfy tees, sneakers or heels are a-ok with you. Rolling up the cuffs or tucking them into boots. You'll go anywhere with me.

Dear Mom Jeans,

You are the most comfortable style of jeans I have ever tried and I hope our journey together never comes close to an end. Thank you.
