Why You Should Change The Way You Look

Magic. That's a good word to describe the transforming feeling you get when a makeover occurs. I just recently made the jump of chopping and dying my hair pink and the mental outcome is something I'd like to talk about.

I had been "dye-ing" (get it? ha, sorry, no, it's ok) to dye my hair pink for a long time. I had dabbled with hair color before, getting a bajalyage, bagalodge, balajosh, you know what I'm talking about. When you get an ombré/highlight combo? In a nice, grape purple, then did pink highlights and dyed it back my natural color last December. They were all fun, but something about dying my whole head pink screamed my name. When it was done, I was sitting in that salon chair, feeling more like myself. It wasn't that I didn't before, it was just that I seemed even more at home in my body now that I'd taken a risk with my appearance that I really wanted to do for a while.

Let's see if you know what I mean. You sleep in your bed every night, so it feels like home. But, eventually, your white sheets are an irreversible shade of light brown, your pillows have hollow spots and you realize that the metal springs in your mattress are starting to pop out and poke you in your sleep, threatening to pull your guts out while you dream. So you take a trip to new-furniture smelling IKEA. That place is great isn't it? Everything's so cute and cheap. You're excited, walking around the showroom, trying to decide which duvet cover you should choose. Light pink, vintage-y flowers or bright blue gingham? I say gingham. You pick out sheets, throw pillows, a lamp, even one of those weird fake art pieces they have on the hallway to the bathroom. You rush home with your order a week later and throw out all that old stuff that doesn't seem to match your style or your hygiene standards anymore and voilá! A new bedroom, a new you. You even seem to sleep better.

That's what pink hair did to me. It wasn't just a childhood fantasy to look like Stephanie from Lazy Town come true, it was a deeper understanding of myself and what I seek to look like physically.

There's this huge stigma that if you get plastic surgery, a tattoo, dye your hair even, it has something to do with your values and your attitude. But what if it didn't? What if I just wanted to dye my hair pink for the fun of it? Leonora Carrington was a surrealist artist who died about 8 years ago. She always felt out of place, but art took her into the visual world that she felt she belonged. I was watching an interview of her from a few years back, where she was telling the interviewer (her cousin) to stop trying to intellectualize her artwork. It was a visual world, no hidden meaning, no metaphors. Art for the sake of art.

You've heard it before. "Don't ever change! You're wonderful the way you are!" "Don't cut your hair, it looks better longer!" "Wear this! You'll look slimmer!" Seems like everyone always has a say on what we look like. My sweet grandma cut her hair short recently and she told me that some of the other ladies at church were telling her that they liked her hair when it was long. But she said that she liked it too, but she just wanted it short now. That's my message today. If you want to change something about yourself physically, whether it your hair or your wardrobe, go ahead and do it because you want to. Of course, if you're gonna get a tattoo or something, maybe consult with your mom or a trusted friend, but I encourage you to make the changes you would be excited to make! Hair dye is cheap, so is nail polish and makeup. Try something new with your look that you've been dying to try.
