Do I have what it takes to be a fashion designer? Because there's a lot more to it than just having good ideas and knowing how to sew. Especially for indepenedent designers, the process requires a lot of attention and skills in every area. From creative skills to technical skills to math to business. Being a Fashion Designer can be a real handful. But I believe any job is made easy with passion and love for what you do. So, let's see if I have either of those things.
I set out to create the mockup for a coin purse. A mockup is a way of creating the final product to see what it would look like without wasting your fancy, expensive materials. If you mess up, you can just try again. I wanted to make something simple, but cute. Small, but functional. Funky, yet ageless. So I came up with a design for a scalloped edge coin purse very clearly inspired by Kate Spade or that pair of Betsey Johnson boots I saw on sale the other day, but they didn't have them in my size and i still cry over them.
My idea was that the scalloped edge would flip over to reveal a zipper or a snap giving you access to your change. I then decided to keep the flip-over concept but instead have an elastic band you can just pull over and secure the front.
Here's the paper version I made, the black line being a representation of the elastic band I couldn't get my hands on. I could see myself buying this, actually. Filling it with my coins and bobby pins. It's 10' so a few things can fit in there.
You might be familiar with one of my blog posts where I talked about calculating Prodution Costs. (It's on the side bar if you're into the fashion industry, how it works or math.) With this piece, I calculated a cost of $16.00 while still using a really nice quality nylon spandex ued for swimwear in a super cute pastel tie dye.
I think I could say that I could maybe, possibly, in a future, be a fashion designer. This is just a part of the creative and production process. There's a lot more to being a fashion designer. It's a job that requires empathy to know what your customer goes through on a daily basis to create a product that will suit their style but also be functional. A vision for the future that looks on the past for inspiration to create timeless pieces that last. And passion for what you do will always take you a long way.
